Oregon Black Truffles

This is a large ripe Oregon Black Truffle, Leucangium carthusiana.

Oregon Black Truffle

are members of the genus Leucangium. They were formerly classified as Picoa, a European genus, but have recently been reclassified. Leucangium carthusiana, considered to be THE Winter Oregon Black Truffle, is the species most often collected.New species of Oregon Black Truffles are located occasionally. There may be as many as seven different Leucangium spp. in Oregon in addition to several species of Picoa. The Spring Oregon Black Truffle, Leucangium species novum, is very similar to the Winter Oregon Black Truffle but  turns red when cut or bruised.

The Oregon Brown Truffle, Leucangium brunnescens, is available only during certain years as they only occasionally fruit heavily.

Oregon Black Truffles are collected year around in varying quantities. They are generally readily available in November through February.
